Customer : TenneT TSO B.V.
Project Overview : Supplying 220kV submarine cables to an offshore wind farm
The submarine power cable supplied to the project

The start and meaning of the project
The Netherlands is concentrating on offshore wind power generation to increase the proportion of renewable energy power generation to 16% by 2023. The Netherlands is planning to construct 10 offshore wind farms from 2019 to 2029, and secure a total of 11GW power generation. It is enough to supply power to more than 10 million households.
Having started with the UK offshore wind farm in 2012, LS Cable & System supplied submarine cables to Denmark and Belgium in 2013 and 2016 respectively, and has since been consistently building trust in Europe. Based on its references it accumulated over a period of 8 years or so, LS Cable & System participated in the bidding for the Dutch project, and was selected as the submarine cable supplier for the Hollandese Kust Noord and West alpha project. The total length of the cables it supplies for this project is 210km. In particular, LS Cable & System was selected through the comprehensive evaluation system, which evaluates technology and project experience, not the lowest bid system, and its global top-tier capabilities were recognized.
Winning the contract with the best proposal
In the bidding process, TenneT, the state-run power company of the Netherlands, expressed concern about coastal construction. The landing point at which the submarine cable drawing electricity from the offshore wind farm lands on land was an area with a lot of tourists in summer. TenneT had to consider the impact of prolonged construction on the tourism industry and the possibility of safety accidents. LS Cable & System identified these customer needs and prepared a proposal that shortened the coastal construction schedule as much as possible.
To win the contract for the project, LS Cable & System was also competitive in health and safety. It already had the OHSAS certification, an international standard, in safety and health management, but TenneT demanded more advanced SCL (Safety Culture Ladder) certification. SCL is a safety culture certification system jointly developed by TenneT and the Netherlands Standardization Institute (NEN). It evaluates the safety awareness level of all employees and the level of the safety culture of the enterprise. As the efforts it made in regard to workplace safety were recognized, LS Cable & System acquired the Lv3 SCL grade without too much difficulty. With the best proposal that took the construction period and safety into consideration, it succeeded in winning the contract for the project in April 2020.
First consortium project
'Hollandse Kust Noord & West Alpha Sea Cable & Installation' is the first project that LS Cable & System carried out by forming a European consortium. To win the contract for the project, it formed a consortium with Jan De Nul, a European offshore facility specialist.
As it was a large project in Europe, cooperation with a local company that has overall and professional competence for installation increased its order competitiveness. In particular, LS Cable & System satisfied customer needs with the most efficient cable design for this project. The customer also sufficiently understood the strengths of each company and the features of the proposal, and expressed its satisfaction.
"We won the contract for this project through a competitive bidding with a competitor that has a lot of experience in the European market. LS Cable & System's technology and competitiveness were recognized. We will concentrate all our competencies in related areas and do our best to carry out the project without any problem and complete it well."

Establishing the Europe headquarters
In Europe, offshore wind farms are actively developed due to the renewable energy expansion policy, and the submarine cables market is also the largest in the world. The market is growing so fast that it will be worth billions of Euros in the next 5 years.
The market growth motivated LS Cable & System to establish the European Headquarters in the UK. Its European Headquarters is now trying to capitalize on the reference it gained by winning the contract for the Hollandse Kust Noord & West Alpha Sea Cable & Installation project to increase its market share.
