Project of LS Cable &
      System Europe

Supplying extra-high voltage cable systems to the world's largest offshore wind farm

      Location : Grimsby, UK

      Customer : Ørsted A/S

Project Overview : Supplying 400kV & 220kV cable systems to build the offshore wind farm infrastructure

      Hornsea offshore wind farm

The start and meaning of the project

The UK was the first among the 7 major countries in the world to declare 'Net-Zero 2050,' i.e. making net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, and legislate it. Taking note of offshore wind power generation to increase renewable energy power generation, the UK began the 'Hornsea Offshore Wind Farms' project, the world's largest offshore wind farm, in Grimsby in east England.

In this project with power generation of 6GW, LS Cable & System supplied and installed extra-high voltage cables in the approximately 38km section from the shore to the substation. By successfully carrying out the project, LS Cable & System proved that it can supply and install a large quantity of cables in Europe.

      Continuously winning contracts

LS Cable & System established a sales subsidiary in 2008 in the UK and advanced into the European market. Since then, it has built recognition by carrying out projects in the Netherlands, France, Italy, Ireland, etc. Orsted, a Danish energy company, which was selected as the constructor for the Hornsea project, thought highly of LS Cable & System's technology in regard to extra-high voltage cables, and selected it as a partner for the 1st project in 2016.

In the 1st project, which was carried out from March 2016 to February 2019, the biggest issue was the time it takes to transport the products. As it took more than a month to transport the products to the site, accidents were very likely to occur. LS Cable & System thoroughly reviewed and managed the weekly transportation schedules and costs for 3 years. It supplied extra-high voltage cables in 400 4.5m-high drums to the site without any problem.

"I am proud that we could participate in the eco-friendly project with our own technology. The active participation of people in the technology, construction and support departments led to the successful completion of the project."

Kim Ji-ho, Overseas Transmission Sales Team 2, LS Cable & System

LS Cable & System's ability to respond to unpredicted variables could earn a great deal of trust from customers. The company in charge of civil works delayed the schedule due to bad weather. The situation was so difficult that the completion of the project had to be delayed, but LS Cable & System injected additional resources, systematically managed the situation, and rather completed the construction earlier than scheduled.

Customers’ trust naturally led to an additional order. Orsted selected LS Cable & System as a partner once again in the 2nd project, which started in September 2018. As it won these two contracts, LS Cable & System proved that it has a definite comparative advantage over European cable makers

Successful completion of the large project

The success factors of the 'Hornsea One & Two Offshore Wind Farms' project can be summarized as Plan, Care and Communication. LS Cable & System has put a lot of effort into designing a cable optimized for the customer's environment. It talked with the customer for more than a half year in the system design process, and accommodated various needs, and proposed additional options first. It participated in the project with the ‘let's make the project together' kind of attitude.

Also, as companies with different specialties participated in different processes of the project, to prevent the waste of schedules and costs, it was essential to make thorough plans and share them with one another. LS Cable & System minimized project risks through mutually constructive communication taking stakeholders into consideration.

Leading to orders for submarine cables

Thanks to the successful completion of a large project in Europe, LS Cable & System proved that it is a competitive trustworthy partner. One success led to another. In the Asia-Pacific region that is highlighted as a new center of offshore wind power generation, Orsted chose LS Cable & System as a partner that will supply submarine cables.

"The offshore wind power market is growing fast in the Asia-Pacific region. To lead the global market, competitive trustworthy cable partners like LS Cable & System are necessary."

Matthias Bausenwein, President of Orsted Asia Pacific

LS Cable & System is currently supplying submarine cables to Orsted's offshore wind power project in Taiwan based on the numerous cases of successfully supplying submarine cables. Also, in 2020, it entered into an agreement for supplying extra-high voltage submarine cables to Orsted for 5 years (framework agreement).
