■ Need to preemptively secure installation infrastructure for collection, assembly, and transportation of port-based wind power facilities
■ Plan for preemptive supply chain establishment in preparation for era of 14 GW offshore wind power in 2030
LS Materials and LS Marine Solutions plan to push forward with a dedicated offshore wind power installation port project.
The two companies announced on the 18th that they have signed an MOU for establishing a port-based offshore wind power supply chain in Korea with Blue Water Shipping (BWS), a specialist in global offshore wind power installation ports.
The purpose of this collaboration between the two parties is to take strategic measures to preemptively respond to the government’s policy of expanding offshore wind power by 14 GW by 2030, and to secure supply chain competitiveness by establishing a dedicated port base capable of assembling and shipping offshore wind power equipment.
This move is significant in that the two companies are not simply supplying equipment and materials, but are also launching a full-fledged total value chain strategy that encompasses the storage, installation, transportation, and maintenance required for performing offshore wind power EPC.
In the first phase, the two companies plan to secure an annual wind turbine processing capacity of 1 GW by designating one port as a pilot base in the second half of this year, and then expand it to major ports to promote operational standardization.
BWS is a global offshore wind port operator that has operated more than 10 offshore wind ports in Europe. This MOU is the first official collaboration between Korean companies and a global offshore wind port operator.
“This collaboration is a strategic starting point for integrating the supply chain for the entire offshore wind energy cycle,” said Hong Young-ho, CEO of LS Materials. “We will expand our presence in the offshore wind power market in Northeast Asia.”
This project is expected to contribute to strengthening industrial independence and national competitiveness by eliminating bottlenecks in offshore wind power ports, generating economic effects worth hundreds of billions of won, and expanding Korea’s role in the global supply chain.
