LS Cable & System announced on the 6th that, together with LS Marine Solution, it has successfully completed Korea’s first mainland-to-Jeju HVDC (high voltage direct current) transmission line construction project.

Jeju-Mainland Connection Project 3, which involved constructing a submarine power grid of approximately 90 km between Jeju and Wando in Jeonnam Province, symbolizes a leap forward in domestic power infrastructure in terms of power grid stabilization and the expansion of carbon-free energy.

This project is the largest submarine cable project in Korea since Jeju-Mainland Connection Project 2, which LS Cable & System won in 2009. The company won a contract from KEPCO for the production and construction of submarine cables worth approximately KRW 230 billion in an international bid in 2020, and successfully carried out the project together with LS Marine Solutions.

HVDC technology converts AC power generated by solar and wind power generation into DC power, which enables long-distance, large-scale transmission. DC transmission has low power loss and emits no electromagnetic waves, so it can minimize impacts on the environment.

In particular, voltage-sourced converter (VSC) HVDC, unlike the existing line-commuted converter (LCC) HVDC, supports bidirectional power transmission and can stably connect irregular renewable energy sources, which significantly improves power grid efficiency. Just a few companies in Europe and Japan have commercialized HVDC submarine cables worldwide, and LS Cable & System is the only one in Korea.

Kim Hyung-won, head of the Energy/Construction Division of LS Cable & System, said, “The completion of Jeju-Mainland Connection Project 3 was achieved by ‘Team Korea,’ which consists of KEPCO, LS Cable & System, LS Marine Solutions, and domestic construction companies. It will be an important success story for K-grid technology to advance into the global market.”

In recognition of its contribution to the successful execution of the project and stabilization of the power grid, LS Cable & System received an appreciation plaque at the completion ceremony held on the 6th at the Dongjeju Substation in Jeju City, which was hosted by KEPCO and attended by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.
